This little cake shop is so underrated that I wanna gatekeep this spot (easy to miss with all the restaurants around it). The cake slices were inexpensive (less than $10 each) and not too sweet or rich, but still elegant and delicious. The caramel mousse cake tasted like a combination of crème brûlée with a light sponge cake. The Elby had the perfect balance of chocolate cake and cream. Highly highly recommend and will return very soon!

Im so glad this place is still in business!! Back in the 90's I'd come here after coming to Video Eye, back when it was right next door. After stocking up on cinematic masterpieces, I'd wander into French Cake for my fruit tart fix, like a true connoisseur of both fine pastry and questionable VHS tapes. The fruit tart is what happiness tastes like. The tiramisu is light, creamy, and just the right amount of sweet. It whispers "la dolce vita" in your ear, but in a polite Japanese accent. I'd always order the kiwi Italian soda too, it was my absolute favorite. Sometimes they had Japanese music playing in the background - something like Globe's "Feel Like Dance" or Every Little Thing's "Dear My Friend" playing faintly in the background. I'm sure the cakes are still good, they've been in business for 30 years in the same location for a reason.

Love their cakes. All of them are good- Japanese cheesecake, Elbe, and more. Particularly love their strawberry shortcake- perfect for Asians who want cakes that aren't overly sweet- most American desserts are too sweet for me. I always order the strawberry shortcake for birthday and other special occasions.

Simple and elegant. Ambiance is nostalgic, like a cake shop out of the 90s. Of the two cakes I've tried (Mistral and Caramel Mousse), they were both well balanced and not overly sweet. My wife and I found a new cake spot instead of going to the run of the mill Asian/French bakeries like 85. Don't get me wrong I love 85° degrees, but Sage's quality is apparent. Would recommend you go there before they run out of pastries for the day!

My sister ordered my birthday cake from here and it is definitely one of the best cheesecakes in SD. Apparently, they only have one kind of [whole] cheesecake. But upon reading the Yelp reviews, I see people writing "layered cheesecake" and "cheesecake soufflé". So for whole cheesecakes, they only do one flavor. It's a Japanese cheesecake, unlike American cheesecakes. It was light, fluffy, and not overly sweet, just the perfect amount of sweetness. I'm not really a cake person; and I'm particular about my cheesecakes. But I had 2 slices. It's that good!

When we were in Convoy because we went to The Keep Coffee They didn't have pastries, and I needed to have a pastry with my drink so we drove down the street. We stopped at a dessert lab but it didn't look appealing so we continued driving down the street. That is when we saw Sage French cake. It was tucked in at a little strip mall. The parking was easy. We went in. The guy that worked there wasn't so friendly but nice enough. We ended up getting a slice of tiramisu and a slice of strawberry cream cake. Both were absolutely delicious. Highly recommend.

Sage French Bakery is Japanese-French (I believe?) bakery in Convoy. I've always passed by it in the plaza but never actually stopped by until recently. I came here at around 3 pm on a weekend afternoon and understandably, a lot of the pastries were gone. I was really looking forward to trying the strawberry shortcake that they had but ended up getting the Mistral, which was $6. The cake itself was light and not too sweet, which I liked. The fruits were also really fresh. Only downside I noticed with the mistral was that the cake was relatively dry. Got the other pastries for some family and they said they were really good overall. I'll come back sometime to try their strawberry shortcake! Other thing is there is a $10 card minimum!

2023/06/04 14:00 Japanese cafe with cute cakes and coffee - only take cash for orders under $10 - look forward to going back and trying some other desserts! Strawberry Shortcake ($5.25): sponge cake with whipped cream and fresh strawberries - very light sponge cake, but it was a little dry - cream was refreshing, sweet but not too sweet - both the strawberry on top and the sliced strawberries were very fresh and sweet - little dollop of cream on the strawberry was different from the rest of the cream, it tasted richer
